This participatory action research project works closely with Guatemalan farmers to mobilize food sovereignty and agroecology as resources to strengthen and expand the prevention of diet and pesticide-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The project uses mixed methods to understand how the engagement of farmers around food sovereignty (i.e. control over their food systems) and the implementation of agroecology (i.e. a regenerative agriculture paradigm) supports positive health practices at the intersection of agriculture and food. Specifically, we are assessing the factors that promote healthy eating practices and the prevention of pesticide exposure to understand how they can be strengthened and expanded. Ultimately, this project aims to provide effective and appropriate strategies to support the health of farmers in Guatemala, as well as to develop globally relevant lessons on the integration of agriculture and food for environmental and human health.
